As of yesterday evening trade rumors out of San Diego indicate the Chargers are looking to deal away Pro Bowl cornerback Antonio Cromartie for a running back to replace LaDanian Tomlinson. Sources around the NFL have included many teams that may take a shot at landing Cromartie and the New York Giants were among the list of teams.
Right now people are mostly speculating, but I wouldn’t doubt that Jerry Reese hasn’t inquired about attaining the services of Cromartie since he is a strong believer in never having enough pass rushers as well as cornerbacks.
I don’t believe Reese would be willing to deal away Brandon Jacobs even though he had a down year in 2009. I believe that Jacobs’ poor season was due to an injury that he suffered in week one. And when he is healthy he is a force and intimidating factor that causes defense’s to cringe.
I do believe the Giants would be willing to part ways with running backs Ahmad Bradshaw or DJ Ware. Bradshaw had a great season backing up Jacobs despite injuries in each foot and ankle. He produced 778 yards on 163 carries which was an average of 4.8 yards a carry along with 7 touchdowns. Bradshaw isn’t built to be an every down back, but if he is teamed up with Darren Sproles the Chargers would have quite an explosive running back tandem. DJ Ware on the other hand has a lot more to prove then Bradshaw. He has yet to carry the ball enough during a season to really display his true NFL potential. Ware was slowed down in 2009 with a dislocated elbow in week one and a concussion later in the season.
If the Giants obtain Cromartie it may be a sign that they are leaning towards converting either Aaron Ross or Terrell Thomas to safety. That is purely a speculation on my part and right now all we can do is, wait and see what happens.
In the end I believe that the Giants right now are sniffing around and I don’t think they will pull the trigger to obtain Antonio Cromartie.
